Drinks that help you sleep better

There’s no miracle cure to help get rid of insomnia, but if you occasionally have trouble falling asleep, you can opt for drinks that help you sleep better.

Sleep is extremely important for our overall health. There are several underlying causes behind insomnia and unfortunately there is no miracle cure to help us get rid of the disorder in a short time and without the help of a doctor. However, if the problem is not acute and only appears temporarily, you can start by enjoying a special beverage before bedtime that will help you sleep better.

Drinks that will help you fall asleep

Herbal tea

You can start introducing drinking herbal tea into your evening ritual. The most recommended beverage to fall asleep faster is holy basil tea, because of its ability to reduce cortisol levels. Some other ideal choices are valerian, chamomile and passionflower.

Turmeric latte

You’ve probably heard that a glass of warm milk can calm you down, but milk isn’t always ideal in the evening as it can cause digestive discomfort, especially if you have a heightened sensitivity to dairy products. There are alternatives though, including turmeric latte. Opt for vegetable milk, almond, cashew, or oat milk and heat up your choice of milk with a teaspoon of turmeric. Stir, add manuka honey and a little cinnamon on top. This combination has an anti-inflammatory effect and manuka honey is ideal for the gastrointestinal tract and immune health.

Drinks that help you sleep better

Plain or fruit-infused water

It’s an excellent habit that many people keep a glass of water on their bedside table at night. Water contains no calories and no added sugar, and it also helps keep the body hydrated. To sleep well at night, drink plenty of water during the day. If you drink too much water before bedtime, however, you will most likely wake up in the middle of the night.

Cherry juice

There is research suggesting that cherry juice helps improve sleep, especially in case of people suffering from insomnia. Certain substances in cherries increase the content of tryptophan, an amino acid involved in the production of serotonin.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a medicinal herb that is excellent in inducing sleep. It is considered an adaptogen, i.e. a plant that helps the body adapt to stress. It reduces cortisol levels and improves sleep quality.
