Peonies are one of the most beautiful spring plants. They have large, elegant flowers and their fragrance is simply intoxicating. If you like them, we have good news for you: you can extend their flowering season!
The trick isn’t difficult, and it’s not prohibitively expensive. All you need to do is follow a few simple golden rules to make your garden bloom with these gorgeous flowers.
Peonies are delicate plants, and their exquisite beauty makes them very popular, especially once they start to bloom. The pink and burgundy hues of the petals add a spectacular elegance to the garden, not to mention the fragrance that overwhelms the area.
Peonies are classic perennials that can thrive for decades with minimal care, if planted in the right soil for their needs.
With peonies, it is essential that the planting is done correctly from the start. These flowers can be quite ‘temperamental’ if they have to be moved from where they have already taken root. It is therefore useful to plan their permanent home well in advance and to ensure that their flowers have enough space to grow without being crowded.
Peonies should be planted at a certain distance from surrounding trees and shrubs so that they do not compete with each other for water and nutrients. These flowers like moist, well-drained soil and ideally like to be watered once a week.
Peonies are by no means drought-tolerant, but will thrive in relatively wet areas. However, care should be taken to remove weeds as soon as they appear, so that they do not choke the plant. As long as the minimum care is taken, the flowers will be simply spectacular!
The flowering season for peonies ranges from late spring to late summer, depending on the varieties in your garden. However, the most common species only flower from May to June.
If you love peonies and want to enjoy them for as long as possible, there’s only one thing you need to do: fertilize the soil. You can use chemical or natural fertilizers for this purpose. However, it is best to use the least harmful products possible.
As an optimal fertilizer, we recommend a nitrogen complex or granules, prepared as follows: 1 tablespoon of active ingredient and 1 teaspoon of ammonium nitrate in 10 liters of water.
As a natural fertilizer you can also use decomposed manure, bird droppings and even grass or compost. Whatever you feed peonies with, it is important to do it at the same time as watering. Especially the weather is dry on the day of fertilizing, water the plant with a bucket or two of water before fertilizing.
