Elderberry flower drink is a traditional soft drink in Romania, enjoyed and appreciated by many generations. Everybody can remember its refreshing taste from their childhood.
Elderberry trees are in bloom in May and June, and this is the primary time when you and your children can enjoy this great beverage. Out of season, you can prepare it using dry flowers which can be kept in paper bags in a dry and cool place. The flowers lose some of their flavor as a result of the drying process, so 2-3 more flowers need to be used than fresh ones.
Elderberry flowers are recommended for digestive problems as they have diuretic and laxative properties. Also, they help in combating the symptoms of common cold, flu and bronchitis. In addition, they are helpful in treating cases of dermatitis, eye problems, rheumatism and cardiac diseases. They can be used in weight loss cures as well.
A simple way to prepare the elder flower beverage
At least 10-12 large elderberry flowers

Wash the flowers and place them at the bottom of the jar. Add the sugar and the lemon juice, and the sliced lemon peels. Add water to fill the jar. Keep the jar in a cool place until the beverage is ready – usually it takes a week or less.
