How to care for Poinsettia to help it bloom all year long

During the Christmas holidays, many family homes were decorated with cheerful, bright red, pink or white-flowered Poinsettias. It is a common problem, however, that these plants die once they finish flowering.

Let’s see what is to be done to keep a Poinsettia alive and well for a long time.

The most important thing is to provide the water and nutrients the plant needs.

How do we know when to water?

If the soil is no longer wet to the touch, the plant needs to be watered. However, never use too much water at a time, because the roots will start rotting. Instead, use a small amount of water often.

In summer, water the plant once every two days.

During periods of higher humidity, water the plant only once a week. In October you should not water to encourage flowering.

In November, you can start watering again once a week.

After flowering, you don’t need to water the plant for a month, but around March you can start watering again. Remove the dry leaves and flowers, and cut back the adult branches.

Transplant Poinsettia every 1-3 years into a slightly bigger pot. Never transplant it into a much larger container, as it will start growing roots in excess and bring fewer flowers.
