Our summer outings can be ruined because of mosquitoes. These tiny blood suckers very often make our life miserable, both during the day and at night. The whining of a single mosquito is enough to keep some of us awake for hours at night, and to make us tired and grumpy in the morning. There are persons whom mosquitoes absolutely love, so for them summer mostly means itching bites.
It is recommended to mix a natural mosquito repellent rather then using products that contain harmful chemicals, as these chemicals are absorbed through the skin.
Ingredients:
- Dried peppermint leaves
- Dried lavender
- Dried camomile
- Alcohol
- Water
Preparation:
Boil up a cup of water, and add 3–4 tablespoons of dried herbs from the list above. You don’t need to add all three plants; it’s enough if you add only one of the three. However, together they will have a more powerful effect.
Take the infusion off the heat, cover it, wait until it cools, and then add some alcohol. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle, and spray it onto your skin when mosquitoes bother you. If you want your children to use it as well, replace the alcohol with apple cider vinegar.
For this mixture, use the following ingredients:
- 1 L apple cider vinegar
- 10 tablespoons mixed herbs, such as lavender, sage, rosemary, thyme or mint.
Preparation:
Place all the herbs into a glass jar, pour in the apple cider vinegar, and then close the jar. Allow the mixture to ripen for 2-3 days, stirring it from time to time. After two or three days, strain the mixture and pour the liquid into a spray bottle. If you would like to use this mixture as an insect repellent, mix it with water at half-and-half ratio. If you are treating a mosquito bite, use the mixture undiluted.
