Turmeric has been used since the mists of time to treat several ailments, from liver disease to depression and ringworms. As with other alternative therapies, there are many researches in the field to support the popular wisdom that turmeric has great healing powers. Here is some evidence of the benefits of this spice.
1. Turmeric soothes heartburns
According to a study conducted in 1989, turmeric supplements have been shown to be more effective in soothing heartburn and indigestion symptoms than placebo. The explanation for this phenomenon could be that this plant fights inflammation.
2. A compound in turmeric prevents heart attack
Curcumin, a compound found in turmeric, is the reason for all the health benefits attributed to this spice. In 2012 there was a study conducted which was related to the ability of curcumin to prevent heart attack. 121 patients participated in the research, which had undergone bypass surgery between 2009 and 2011. Three days before surgery and five days after it, half of the patients took curcumin capsules, while the other half received placebo pills. About 30% of patients in the second group had a heart attack after bypass, compared with only 13% of the patients in the first group. The researchers concluded that anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of curcumin can reduce up to 65% the risk of experiencing a heart attack after a bypass surgery.

3. Turmeric keeps away diabetes
It was found that people predisposed to diabetes can delay the onset of disease if they consume turmeric, concluded by a study in 2012. For nine months, the participants in the research were given either curcumin supplements or placebo capsules. 16% of those taking placebo got diabetes type 2, while none among the participants who used curcumin developed the disease. These results prove the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of curcuma.
4. Turmeric fights against cancer
Although studies on humans are still in a rudimentary phase, research on animals has shown promising results related to the anticancer effects of curcumin. It seems that this component interferes with the development and spreading of diseased cells in the body.

5. Another compound of turmeric protects the brain
Turmeronul was not as thoroughly studied as curcumin, but it seems that it plays a very important role in maintaining the health of the body. According to an animal study, turmeron helps repair cells in the brain stem. These cells are involved in the recovery from neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. This means that turmeron could be a cure for these diseases. Also, a new study suggests that the memory of Alzheimer patients may be improved by curcumin.
6. Turmeric can reduce joint pain
Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, curcumin can be used to treat those suffering from arthritis. In addition, a study claims that turmeric extract works in the same way as Ibuprofen in people suffering from osteoarthritis.
