Lip balm is a cosmetic product we use every day; persons with dry lips need to apply it several times a day. It has to be hydrating, and pleasant to feel and smell. In addition, due to the fact that we will inevitably ingest a large amount, it needs a formula as clean as possible, without toxic chemicals and potential carcinogens.
The good news is that you may prepare your own 100% natural nourishing lip balm.
The recipe
For preparing lip balm, you will need:
- 2 teaspoons organic cocoa butter
- 1 teaspoon beeswax
- 3 teaspoons olive or coconut oil, sold pressed
- 5-10 drops peppermint or other non-irritant essential oil
Small containers
In a thick-bottomed pot, combine cocoa butter, beeswax, and the oil of your choice. Warm up the compound slightly to homogenize the composition of the balm. Alternatively, you can microwave the mixture for 30 de seconds. Don’t let it come to a boil as high temperature will destroy the active components. Remove the pot from the heat when butter is melted and the compound looks set.
Let the mixture cool down and then mix in the essential oil. Pour the balm in small containers.
Taking into account the variations in the consistency of the ingredients, you will need to slightly adjust the recipe until obtaining the desired consistency.
The benefits of cocoa butter
Cocoa butter is obtained from the beans of the cacao tree, and it contains a great amount of antioxidants. For example, it contains twice as much antioxidant components as red wine, and three times as much as green tea. This, and also magnesium, vitamin C, chrome and zinc, make cocoa butter a super-ingredient for any beauty product.
