Even the world of animals the arrival of a new life is a true miracle. The video shows how happy the whole herd is when the mother elephant gives birth to a baby, and how the members of the herd are determined to protect the baby and help him take his first steps.
We rarely have the chance to see the birth of an animal baby in the wilderness, especially when the mother is a huge animal such as a she-elephant. Christian and Ginette Leroy took a video in Chobi national Park, Botswana while a she-elephant was in labor and gave birth to a healthy baby.
The reaction of the herd is absolutely special. Together with the new mother, they surround the newly born baby, clean him off very gently and help him stand on his own feet, supporting him for the whole time.
First they remove the birth sack in which the baby has been wrapped in the belly of her mother. After that, they lift him carefully with their trunks, encouraging him to trust in his own strength and stand on his own feet. The whole time, the herd surrounds the baby to protect him from any harm.
At the place where the baby lives, the elephants are safe. However, in the wilderness baby animals are always exposed to the attacks of predators that prey on them continuously and the maternal and protective instinct of the adults is vital for the baby. It is beautiful how only 10 minutes from his birth the tiny baby elephant stands on his feet and steps boldly into his new life.
