Studies have shown that half of the general feeling of well-being is determined by genetics, and less than 40% of it is given by the impact of outer circumstances.
This leaves us with only 12% influence over our own happiness, so our choices are very important in making a difference. Some people practice daily some simple routines, and they are conscious of the effects of these routines.
1) They exercise
Many people who seem happy aren’t in the best shape physically, so it is difficult to believe they exercise daily. The explanation is that all we need is 7 minutes of exercise daily to achieve a state of well-being. This short time is enough for the body to produce endorphins, the neurotransmitters which are responsible for happiness.
2) They spend time outdoors
A mere 20 minutes a day spent outdoors daily is sufficient time to raise your level of happiness. You can kill two birds with one stone of you use this time to exercise as well. A walk during your lunch break in the nearest park, for example, will change your mood to the better.
3) They focus on their family
Most people consider their families the most important part of their lives. If you wish to be happy, bury the hatchet with your brother-in-law and spend more time with your parents, children and even stepbrothers, if you have any.
4) They make time for their friends
Friends are the family we can choose ourselves. Several minutes reserved for socialisation daily matter a lot in raising the level of happiness. Even a short phone conversation can make a difference.
5) They find satisfaction in their work
The level of satisfaction in the work field can make or break happiness, as a great part of a state of well-being comes from the simple fact that you use your talents daily.
6) They get involved in the community
Being part of a community or a group of people you have something in common with offers a sense of belonging, and it boosts your self-esteem. Every single day, truly happy people find something to share within the community they belong to.
7) They sleep enough
Lack of sleep can destroy your life. If you don’t sleep enough, you will become moody, and your thinking won’t be clear. In fact, every factor that would increase your happiness will be affected by your want of rest. Happy people aren’t less busy than others, but they are conscious of the fact that, if necessary, they have to resign to something so they don’t deprive themselves of sleep
