Six reasons why you should eat figs daily

Figs come from Egypt; they were mentioned first in the year 9200 BC, and they have been used as a basic food item in many cultures for a long period of time. Fresh figs are available only for a short period of the year, but dried figs can be purchased all around the year, and they can be used to replace sugar in many desserts.

Figs contain 80% water and a large amount of sugar. They provide a lot of energy, which stimulates the functioning of the brain and improves memory and concentration.

In ancient times, 30 species of figs were known; they were considered a sacred fruit, and people consumed them regularly. Today more than 600 species are known, and they are all equally delicious and healthy.

Figs contain high amounts of calcium and potassium, two minerals that are important for healthy bones and skin and the proper functioning of many organs. They are also excellent for cleaning the blood vessels, contain few calories and are an excellent source of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants.

Here’s why you should consume figs daily:

For strong bones

Figs contain high amounts of some minerals and vitamins important for the health of the bones – namely magnesium, calcium and vitamin K2. This fruit is special because it contains all three of these essential substances, which can’t work effectively without each other: calcium is inert without vitamin K2 and magnesium.

For a healthy heart

Figs minimize the deposits of calcium in the bloodstream. In addition, they have a high content of magnesium and potassium, which makes them excellent for maintaining a healthy heart.

For losing weight

Figs are high in soluble and insoluble fibers. Insoluble fiber helps to clean waste from the colon, thus helping to reduce constipation. Both types of fiber are important in regulating body weight. Soluble fiber slows down the rate of digestion and makes you feel fuller for longer. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels.

For reducing the levels of triglycerides

Figs can help reduce the levels of triglycerides in the bloodstream. Triglycerides are considered one of the key factors in the diagnosis of heart disease, obesity and cholesterol.

For improving vision

Dried figs contain large amounts of phenol, a powerful antioxidant. Phenol is an extremely effective tool for improving eyesight especially in the elderly; it is, in fact, more effective than antioxidants found in vegetables such as carrots.

For maintaining the optimal pH value

Figs belong to the alkaline food group, and this is why they help the body achieve and maintain the optimum pH level of 7.0-7.4.
